School chickens

In 2021 we were lucky enough to be offered 5 chickens from another local school who were unable to continue caring for them. We bought all the necessary supplies to keep them safe and well and got them settled behind our Year 3 and 4 classrooms.

Our chickens are laying eggs regularly which shows that they are enjoying their new home.

We could not have anticipated the positive impact that our hens would have on the children at the school. Children are excited to come into school in the morning. Those who are nervous of flapping wings feel proud of themselves when they manage to stroke a chicken or change a water feeder.

Children who are struggling to regulate for a moment are finding that 10 minutes with the chickens can make all the difference in how grounded and settled they feel.

What a wonderful addition to our school and we hope that the positive impact will continue indefinitely.
